GENESEE COUNTY, MI – Genesee County has acquired property that will be the future site of a new recycling and education center.

The land was acquired via partnership with the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, the Genesee County Treasurer’s Office and the Genesee County Land Bank.

The recycling and education center will be located at 609 Chavez Drive in Flint, according to a county news release. It was the former location of McDonald Dairy and Country Fresh before closing in 2009.

“We’re incredibly excited about the prospect of a proper recycling and education center to serve the residents of the county,” James Avery, chairman of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, said. “A partnership like this one is proof positive that we are moving forward with Genesee County’s priority of creating safer, healthier, and more livable communities.”

Genesee County commissioners approved a $650,000 budget for demolition at the site. Burnash Wrecking was selected through a bid process.

A planned state-of-the-art recycling and education center facility will provide a centralized location for recyclable material drop-offs, according to a release from the county.

“This partnership is a major step toward achieving an ambitious goal for our residents,” said Derek Bradshaw, Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission Director. “We want to ensure that we are doing our part to promote environmental stewardship while offering residents a service that is in high demand.”
